Label outside vertex

Hi, I am not sure if this has been asked before. I tried searching but in vain.

I have a vertex with an image filling it. So the label is not always visible. Is it possible to put the label on the outside edge of the vertex ? [desirable solution] or can someone help me put the text in a white rectangle and place it in the center of the vertex? [workaround]

any help will be great.
